Foi lançado em 12 de Setembro de 1989, pelo selo A&M Records. A concepção de Rhythm Nation 1814 foi baseada na injustiça social. O álbum foi um mega sucesso, tendo sete dos seus oito singles no Top 5 da Billboard Hot 100, tendo também, três singles #1 em três anos consecutivos (1989-1991), sendo assim, o único álbum na história a conseguir esses feitos. O disco também, foi o segundo álbum consecutivo da cantora a chegar ao #1 da Billboard 200. Rhythm Nation 1814 vendeu 30 milhões de cópias no mundo todo.
